Finding a leak in a swimming pool can be a frustrating experience.  The first step is to determine if you actually have a leak by performing the bucket test.  Set a bucket of water on the top step in your pool and mark the level of the water in the bucket.  Then mark the pool water level on the outside of the bucket.  The levels should drop at the same rate.  If the level of the pool drops faster than the water in the bucket you have confirmed that you actually have a leak.

The next step is to determine if the leak is in the pool shell or in the plumbing.  Mark your water level and monitor for 24 hours with the filter running, then refill to your mark and monitor for 24 hours with the filter off.  If the water drops at the same rate, the leak is most likely in the body of the pool and not in the pipes.  If the water drops faster with the filter running the leak will probably be in your return lines, the lines sending water back into your pool.  If the water level drops faster with the filter off, the leak could be in your skimmer lines or bottom drain line.

Common Places to check for leaks:

  • Backwash line at filter.
  • Around pool fittings, lights, drains, and steps.
  • Hydrostatic relief valve in bottom of pool.
  • Around skimmer mouth and inside of skimmers.
  • Light conduit in back of light housing.
  • Any cracks in pool shell or blemishes in liner.
