All water treatment programs have several elements in common.  Below are some of the basics you should familiarize yourself with no matter what treatment program you choose.

Water Balance
Sanitizer Level
Water Testing
Supplemental Sanitizers
Balancing Guidelines

WATER BALANCE

All pool care programs require pool water to be properly balanced to protect your pool shell and equipment and maximize swimmer comfort.  While several companies advertise "Chemical Free" or "Chlorine Free" systems, a close look at the fine print will usually reveal that water should be balanced in accordance with NSPI standards.

One of the most important factors in water balance is pH.  If pH is too low the water becomes acidic, if pH is too high scale and mineral deposits can result.  pH should be tested on a regular basis and adjusted as needed.

Several other factors include calcium hardness, total alkalinity, and saturation index.  By using Buddy's Pool Service in-store computerized water analysis service you do not need to learn about all of these complex balance formulas and interactions.  We have listed the general industry guidelines below for your reference, however, some chemical programs may have slightly different recommendations.

SANITIZER LEVEL

The purpose of the sanitizer is to kill bacteria and algae to provide a safe environment for swimmers and clear sparkling water.  The most common sanitizer used in swimming pools today is chlorine, however, several programs do use alternative sanitizers such as bromine, or biguanide.

For any program to work effectively the sanitizer level must be properly tested and maintained.  Some water treatment programs are much easier and are more effective than others.

WATER TESTING

Water testing is essential for ALL pool and spa care programs.  Lack of testing will eventually result in problems with water clarity, algae, premature equipment failure, staining and more.

By following our recommended testing procedures most problems can be avoided and you can enjoy your pool more.  We recommend testing your water weekly at home for pH and sanitizer levels. Additionally we recommend bringing a sample of water in to our store for a computerized water analysis at the following times:

  • 24 - 48 Hours after pool is opened in the spring
  • Every 3 - 4 weeks while the pool is open
  • Any time you are having problems maintaining proper sanitizer levels or pH
  • One week prior to closing

Our professional water testing facilities will generate a customized computer printout based on your specific pool or spa.  This printout will give detailed instructions on what should be added to your water to put it in proper balance.  In addition, we can assist with problems such as algae, staining and cloudy water.

Supplemental Sanitizers

While chlorine is the primary sanitizer used on most swimming pools, several supplemental products are available to minimize problems, improve swimmer comfort and reduce chlorine levels.  Such products include BioGuard Optimizer Plus, ozone generators, mineral sanitizers, and ionizers.

While supplemental sanitizers are not designed to work alone, they can be very effective in improving water quality when used in conjunction with a quality pool care program.  Be sure to get professional advice when choosing a supplemental sanitizer as they are not all compatible with specific pool care systems.

Balancing Guidelines

The following are to be used a general guideline only, specific program recommendations may vary.

Measured Parameter Ideal Range
pH 7.4 - 7.6
Total Alkalinity 80 - 120 ppm
Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) 1000 - 2000 ppm
Calcium Hardness 200 - 400 ppm
Heavy Metals None
Stabilizer Level 30 - 50 ppm
Free Chlorine 1 - 3 ppm
